Obituary: Dr. Malvin E. Ring

Brighton, NY: A world-renowned expert on dental history and a resident of Brighton died peacefully on April 8, 2010. Upon leaving Brooklyn after serving in WWII and Korea, Dr. Ring settled in Batavia, New York where he practiced dentistry. When he retired in 1985, he moved to Brighton.

Dr. Ring was one of the worlds leading authorities on dental history. For 27 years, he served as Professor of Dental History at the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Buffalo. He was also the author of Dentistry-An Illustrated History as well as over 200 articles that were published in scholarly and popular publications. Dr. Ring also edited the Bulletin of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry for 27 years. Recently he was awarded the highest honors bestowed by the Fellowship of the American College of Dentists, the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of the History of Dentistry.

In addition to receiving a BA from Brooklyn College, a DDS from St. Louis University, Dr. Ring also received a MLS from SUNY Geneseo, one of only three dentists to hold both dental and library degrees.

Dr. Ring is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilda (Silver) Ring. He is also survived by a son, Hilary from Port Washington, NY; a daughter, Susan Ring, of Providence, RI; 2 step-daughters, Sharon Stiller of Rochester, NY and Susan Stiller of Pueblo, CO and a step-son, Jerome Stiller of Denver, CO; along with his loving grandchildren, Holly, Jillian, Sierra, Ariel and Alex; sister, Deena Dunn of Los Angeles, CA.
